The Importance of Play

In the recent Sunday Review section of the New York Times, David Kohn contributed an editorial entitled Let the Kids Learn Through Play.  He challenges a current school trend that beginning formal education at an earlier age is what’s best for young learners.  He shares that “a growing group of scientists, education researchers and educators say there is little evidence that this approach improves long-term achievement; in fact, it may have the opposite effect, potentially slowing emotional and cognitive development, causing unnecessary stress and perhaps even souring kids’ desire to learn.”  Finding the right balance of playful exploration and building academic skill is certainly an ongoing debate, and one we embrace fully throughout Lower School.
